Getting a doctor’s appointment in France

You’ve got a stomach ache for the past 3 days. And you feel that you need medications to feel better. You could stuff yourself with paracetemol and wait.

But why suffer when there are doctors available to help.

All you need to do is take an appointment.

How? This is what we are going to see.

Usually frequented doctors: le généraliste (general practitioner), le dentiste (dentist), l’ophtalmologiste (ophthalmologist), le pédiatre
(paediatric), le gynécologue (gynaecologist). If you need to visit a specialist, you have to go through your General Practitioner first.

How to find them ?

Ask a friend to recommend a doctor.

Or else you could” also consult the Pages Jaunes (yellow pages) of your locality. Type your address in “Où ” (where) and tick “à proximité de” (in proximity of).

Telephone the doctor. You might have to speak to the doctor’s secretary or the doctor himself.

The doctor’s clinic is called “le cabinet” (Note : « les cabinets » = the toilet).

Conversations

(Note : « les cabinets » = les toilettes)

Exemple de conversation

Secrétaire : – Cabinet du Docteur Maxime bonjour.

Is Thrusday the 12 at 10am convenient?

That’s good. Thank you very much.

Avez-vous autre chose (à me proposer) ?

No, i’m busy on that day. Could you suggest another vacant time slot?

It’s urgent, can you please give me an appointment at the earliest ?

Secrétaire : – Non, désolée. Tout est plein.

No, sorry. We are full.

Can you suggest any other doctor? I desperately need to see one.

Secrétaire : – Oui./Non.

If it is VERY urgent

Do i have to go to the E.R?

Secrétaire : – Oui / Non

Vous : – Merci madame /monsieur, à bientôt.

Thank you Madam/sir.

Et voila !

Note 1 : Let me bring it to your notice that you don’t require your french papers to visit a doctor or the emergency ward.

Note 2 : You have to pay the full consultation fee and the bill for the medicines. The GP’s consultation fee is around 23€. And Gynaecologists may charge sometimes up to 60€. Ask for the price when you book!

Note 3 : If you can’t afford to pay the gynaecologist’s fee, go to Planning Familial.

>

Bon courage !

Géraldine
