How to Buy Makeup in France

Ever felt clueless in a Sephora? Not being able to ask for what you wanted? It hurts! It happened to me a lot. So here are the basics you will need to be « la plus belle ».

Make up

Let’s become the prettiest girl ever. No less. ????

First thing first, you will need un fond de teint (foundation). Choose it according to your couleur de peau (skin color) : peau foncée (dark skin) or peau claire (white skin). It will be une poudre compacte (foundation) or une crème (a cream).

On your cheeks, you will apply du blush, with un pinceau (brush)

For your lips, you will get du rouge à lèvres (lipstick), maybe you will buy un crayon à lèvres (lip pencil) as well. And probably du gloss for a shiny coat.

For your eyes, get une ombre à paupières, also called un fard à paupières (eyeshadow). You can also draw a line with un crayon pour les yeux also called eyeliner. Finish with un mascara. And you are ready to go!

Note: for perfect eyebrows, you may need une pince à épiler (tweezers).

Creams

In order to go from zombie to princess in the early hours of the day, we usually use all sorts of magic creams. You know, the ones our boyfriends make fun of… Until they get theirs. ????

During the day, on your pretty face, you use une crème de jour (day moisturizer) and at night une crème de nuit (night moisturizer).

For your eyes, you use un contour des yeux (eye cream).

To get super soft, you use un gommage pour le corps (body exfoliator) and un gommage pour le visage (facial exfoliator). And you want to tell him « Touch here! It is SO soft. ».

And from time to time, look like Shrek and apply un masque (a mask).

At night, remove all this with un démaquillant (cleanser).

Nails

To get your fingers ready, remove the former nail polish with un dissolvant (polish remover).

Prepare them with une lime à ongles (nail file).

Then, apply une base (base) and a few coats of un vernis (nail polish) with un top coat at the end.

At the shop

You can also buy un parfum (perfume).

And usually, the shop assistant offers des échantillons (samples) so you can try new products at home.

Have fun. Like for supermarket, I highly recommend you visit make-up shops: it is quite different from the ones in your country. Great gifts for your friends at home!
