How to buy towels and tampons in France

Bonjour !

Today’s topic might not be the sexiest on Earth but girls, let’s be honest, we’ve all been through it.

Think about this:

Oh no! You have your period and only ONE tampon left! You will have to go out and buy a box. In France. In French.

Where? Which brand? How? That’s what we’ll see together.

What about you?
Have you ever been short of one of these and needed to ask for one? How did you ask?
Any fun story to share? What differences did you notice with your own country?

  • Géraldine! No one uses the term towels since the 1960’s, unless you are living among the Amish.

Modern women say pads (or sanitary napkins) and tampons. Some may even call them by the brand name Kotex or Maxipad (for pads) and Tampax (for Tampons)

Teens will be more crass and say pads or plugs.

  • I had a related type problem while in Paris. I had a terrible
yeast infection and was miserable. I went to a pharmacy and was turning red trying to explain that I had “un problem de la femme”
to Madame. After several tries she “Oh, my dear you have a yeast infection.”She then got me the best medicine I have ever used for such a problem. At that time, in the USA you needed a perscription but not in France.
    Vive la France!

  • I would never say sanitary napkin in the States, although I have heard it. We’d say “pad.”

  • Thanks for your fun posts Geraldine! Just for info, in the States, we say “sanitary napkin” instead of towel.
    Looking forward to more posts!
