It’s often frustrating to only know « Oui » and « Non » when you’d like to say « Maybe », « I’m not sure » or « No way ».

How to properly…
In some situations, there’s just ONE proper way to say something. I call this « automatic phrases ». Phrases and expressions we don’t even think about when using them.
Here are a few « automatic phrases » for you:
– Exchange email addresses in French
– Talk to your partner… In French
– say you want something but don’t know the French word for it

in addition to what Doug describes above, is it rude to say ‘un noir’ pour parler de qqn qui a une peau noire? (this always happens, I start in one language and I finish in another…)

Like all similar topics, it depends on the intention you give to it. Just like in English.
I don’t believe that words only are offensive. Only the meaning that’s behind them.
In this case, it is better to say “Il est noir” just like you’d say “Il est roux” or “Elle est blonde”. You state a fact.
I am new to your site. I would love to know more about the subtleties of describing people. For example we say blond, dirty blond, bleached blond. Red hair is a challenge as well: strawberry blond, ginger, red head. If I say je suis noir, is it I have black hair or I have african ancestry?

We say “Je suis blond” / “Je suis roux” / “Je suis brun” for hair
“Je suis noir” refers to the color of your skin. 🙂
For ambiguous color such as “blanc”, say “J’ai les cheveux blancs” (hair) / “Je suis blanc” (peau)
I would love to know about how to talk more about philosophy and art!!
